sand carved violin

Detail showing a sand carved and etched violin and musical notation (4″x 4″).

One of the special techniques we do in house is sandblasting.  The terms “sandblasting” and “sand carving” are often used somewhat interchangeably with “etching” to label the process of abrading glass to form designs.  They actually refer to different sub-techniques within the etching process.  This detail of a violin, from a project completed many years ago, shows how we will use a combination of two other sub-techniques called depth carving and shading.  Combining these different techniques is quite challenging and few studios will use them all, preferring to specialize in one or two.
