Sculpture at Kaiser Permanente, Lone Tree, Colorado

Here is a quick look at the fifth floor section of of our recently completed installation at the new Kaiser Permanente health care building in Lone Tree, Colorado. It flows down a stairwell atrium so is rather difficult to capture in still images – look for a video soon.

“The Trail” a five story glass and metal sculpture of 40 glass and metal art bicycle wheels attached to a 200 ft. steel ribbon.

We were tasked with creating artwork that would encourage visitors and staff to take the stairs rather than elevators, in keeping with Kaiser Permanente’s “Thrive” program promoting physical activity. Each wheel is a unique creation. Even during the installation, we witnessed the pull of the artwork on contractors working in the building. They would pop in from a floor to take a look and then walk up or down just to see a newly installed wheel or two.

The design was conceived by Keeley Musgrave. The wheels were created by Keeley, Philip Durbin, and Michael Shields. The installation was lead by Matthew Durbin who dangled from ropes, at times 90′ above the floor!

Building planners at Kaiser supplied an outstanding lighting set up which we took full advantage of to create cast color and shadow patterns.

Each unique wheel relates to nearby wheels as well as the color scheme of each floor of the health care facility.

The sculpture “begins” with these two wheels on the first floor of the stairwell atrium.
